8.13 TALKING ABOUT THE PAST: The Pluperfect

The pluperfect in Spanish allows you to express things like ‘I had taken’ or ‘I had eaten’.

Once you understand the present perfect and how to form the past participle of verbs, the pluperfect is really quite simple.

It is also formed using the pluperfect form of the verb ‘haber’ (había, habías, había, habíamos, habían, habían) and the past participle form of the verb. Let’s look at some examples:

Yo había comido – I had eaten
Tú habías dicho algo – You had said something (informal)
Usted había trabajado mucho – You had worked a lot (formal)
Él/Ella había vivido en esta calle – He/She had lived on this street
Nosotros/Nosotras habíamos caminado todo el día – We had walked all day
Ustedes habían terminado la tarea – You had finished the task (plural)
Ellos/Ellas habían bailado en la fiesta – They had danced at the party
